58. Temporarily Accepting Ideas
After discussing yesterday’s post with ChatGPT I realized I have to accept some ideas as true when studying but only temporarily. So how can I attempt to do this rationally?
If I feel or think an idea is incorrect in any way I am free to question it at any time.
But if I am temporarily accepting this idea then I am accepting this idea because…
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because of some authority?
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because it is widely held?
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because of evidence?
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because it is a means to some other end like a job or qualification?
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because it avoids conflict or disagreement with others?
- Am I accepting this idea temporarily because it aligns with my current understanding or biases?
I accept this idea temporarily because it provides a useful starting point for further critical analysis and exploration. Ideally, I will try to write down my explanation for why I think it is a useful starting point. I recognize that its acceptance does not preclude me from later seeking better explanations or actively pursuing error correction.
